  21. 1. BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!
  22. -----------------------
  23. Remember to back up your hard drives before using PartitionMagic.
  24. While PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested, power failures, 
  25. operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data 
  26. at risk. BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE 
  27. CHANGES TO YOUR HARD DISK, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA.

  29. To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest Drive 
  30. Image(R). Drive Image is a disk imaging tool that lets you create
  31. an image of your entire system that can easily be restored. 
  32. Having a backup lets you run PartitionMagic with the security 
  33. of knowing that you can get your system back up and running 
  34. if you run into problems.

  37. 2. ACTIVATING PARTITIONMAGIC
  38. ----------------------------
  39. When you install PartitionMagic, the software is in demo mode until 
  40. you activate it. In demo mode, you can make changes that appear in 
  41. the PartitionMagic interface, but you cannot apply those changes. The 
  42. first time you run PartitionMagic, you are prompted to activate the 
  43. software. You can click Yes to activate the software immediately, or 
  44. you can use the software in demo mode and activate it later. To 
  45. activate the software later, click General > Activate Product from 
  46. the PartitionMagic menu bar. Then follow the directions in the 
  47. activation dialog.

  50. 3. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
  51. ----------------------
  52.  
  53. - PartitionMagic does not support Windows NT Server or 
  54.   Windows 2000 Servers.
  55.  
  56. - Be aware that there is no undo (after clicking Apply) if you 
  57.   merge two FAT or FAT32 partitions. You must be particularly 
  58.   careful not to merge two primary partitions that include 
  59.   operating systems, as your computer will not be bootable if 
  60.   you do.
  61.  
  62. - Progress bars are an estimation only and may pause for several 
  63.   minutes, even though PartitionMagic is still working correctly.
  64.   If you think your computer has locked up, please be patient and 
  65.   allow PartitionMagic to finish the operation.
  66.  
  67. - You should set up removable media drives so that they are the 
  68.   last drives on your system. Drives are assigned priorities as 
  69.   follows: primary master, primary slave, secondary master, 
  70.   secondary slave. You should not have a fixed hard drive 
  71.   set up as the secondary master if you have a removable media 
  72.   drive set up as the primary slave. If you have two IDE
  73.   controllers, you should connect removable media drives to 
  74.   the second controller, after any hard drives. If you have a
  75.   RAID configuration, disconnect any removable media (such as 
  76.   a Zip drive) before using PartitionMagic. If you do not 
  77.   configure removable media drives as the last drives, you 
  78.   will see disk numbering inconsistencies in the PartitionMagic 
  79.   interface, and the wizards will not work on your system.
  80.  
  81. - Bad Sector Checking is OFF by default. PartitionMagic ships 
  82.   with bad sector checking turned OFF by default. Modern hard 
  83.   disks are designed to avoid bad sectors automatically.  
  84.   However, if you feel that bad sectors may be a problem on your 
  85.   system, turn on bad sector checking (by unchecking the 
  86.   appropriate boxes in the "Skip bad sector checks" list box in 
  87.   Preferences). Turning on bad sector checking ensures that data 
  88.   is not moved or copied to bad disk sectors; however, this 
  89.   causes the create, move, and resize operations to slow down 
  90.   considerably. Another way to verify that there are no bad 
  91.   sectors on your disk is to run the operating system check 
  92.   utility (CheckDisk or ScanDisk) and do a surface scan before 
  93.   launching PartitionMagic.
  94.  
  95. - A non-Asian language version of PartitionMagic should never 
  96.   be used on an Asian language version of Windows NT/2000/XP, 
  97.   as this may cause corruption of filenames and partition/
  98.   volume set labels.
  99.  
  100. - You cannot use PQBoot for Windows (a utility included with 
  101.   PartitionMagic) unless there is at least one primary 
  102.   partition on the first hard disk.

  106. 4. KNOWN ISSUES - WINDOWS NT/2000/XP ONLY
  107. -----------------------------------------
  108.  
  109. - PartitionMagic does not support volume sets, stripe sets, stripe 
  110.   sets with parity, or partitions located on disk mirror/duplex 
  111.   sets configured using Windows NT Disk Administrator. Under 
  112.   Windows 2000/XP, PartitionMagic supports standard partitions 
  113.   located on basic disk sets only.
  114.  
  115. - In a configuration with mixed IDE and SCSI hard drives, Windows 
  116.   NT does not always see the boot drive as the first physical hard 
  117.   disk. PartitionMagic displays drives in the order Windows NT 
  118.   reports them. As a result, you may see your boot device as Drive 
  119.   1, 2, and so forth. This does not cause problems for 
  120.   PartitionMagic except when setting a new active partition. Also, 
  121.   PartitionMagic may incorrectly report that there is no active 
  122.   partition on your system. To change your active partition, be 
  123.   sure that you identify which drive is the boot drive. 
  124.  
  125. - You should not change the drive letter originally assigned to 
  126.   the Windows NT/2000/XP boot partition (the partition where Windows 
  127.   is installed). Changing the drive letter to anything but its 
  128.   original designation will cause severe boot problems and may 
  129.   cause your computer to be unbootable.
  130.  
  131. - Under Windows 2000 or Windows XP, if you perform operations 
  132.   on partitions that include mount points, you must restore the 
  133.   mount points after the operations are complete.
  134.  
  135. - Error 183: Init Failed. If you attempt to run PartitionMagic on 
  136.   a Windows 2000/XP Professional machine where the boot partition
  137.   (the partition where Windows 2000/XP Professional is installed) 
  138.   is on a dynamic disk, you will receive the following error message: 
  139.   "Init failed: Error 183. Unable to identify the Windows partition." 
  140.   To solve this problem, Windows 2000/XP must be installed on a 
  141.   basic disk.
  142.  
  143. - Error 184: If you encounter error 184 when initializing 
  144.   PartitionMagic, run Disk Administrator (Windows NT) or Disk 
  145.   Management (Windows 2000/XP), then start PartitionMagic again.
  146.  
  147. - If the System Restore feature of Windows XP is monitoring a drive, 
  148.   PartitionMagic cannot perform operations on that drive in Windows. 
  149.   Instead it must drop down to boot mode to perform the operations. 
  150.   The operation will still be successful. 
  151.  
  152. - To uninstall PartitionMagic under Windows XP, you must be logged 
  153.   in as the user who originally installed the product.  If the user 
  154.   account has been deleted, you must remove PartitionMagic 
  155.   manually by cleaning out the PartitionMagic install directory and 
  156.   registry.

  160. 5. KNOWN ISSUES - WINDOWS 9x ONLY
  161. ---------------------------------
  162.  
  163. - On a computer with a dual boot, if you have more than 20 
  164.   partitions, you may not be able to launch PartitionMagic from  
  165.   Windows 9x.
  166.  
  167. - If you create an NTFS partition under Windows 9x, it will be 
  168.   created with NTFS version 3.0, which is not compatible with 
  169.   Windows NT 4.0.  To create an NTFS version 1.2 partition that will 
  170.   work with Windows NT 4.0, run PartitionMagic under Windows NT 4.0 
  171.   or from the rescue disks and create the partition.

  173. - Under Windows 9x, PartitionMagic and the operating system may assign 
  174.   different drive letters to USB, USB2, and FireWire drives. This 
  175.   problem is a result of the inconsistent way the operating system 
  176.   assigns drive letters for removable devices. If the drive 
  177.   letters appear differently in PartitionMagic than they do in "My 
  178.   Computer," PartitionMagic can still work on the removable drive.

  181. 6. UNINSTALLING WINDOWS ME
  182. --------------------------
  183. If you use PartitionMagic (or FDISK or any other partitioning
  184. software), you should be aware of the following Microsoft warning.
  185.  
  186. IMPORTANT: You should not attempt to uninstall Windows Me if the 
  187. partition information for your hard disk or disks has changed 
  188. since you last installed Windows Me successfully.  Windows Me 
  189. creates a backup copy of your partition information in the 
  190. Suhdlog.dat file at the end of a successful installation, and 
  191. Uninstal.exe restores the partition information listed in the 
  192. Suhdlog.dat file to your hard disk during the uninstall.  If the 
  193. partition information on your hard disk or disks has changed 
  194. since you last installed successfully (specifically, since the 
  195. Suhdlog.dat file was created), then you might experience partial 
  196. or complete data loss as a result of attempting to uninstall 
  197. Windows Me.
